Day 6
Managed to persuade 'Paul' to get up nice and early for a 7 am departure, which was very good of him seeing as we were paying for it!
Rather frantic and at times near death journey, encountering juggernauts, cows, sheep and local urinating people on route.
Arrived Jodhpur early afternoon for check into our hotel, a 18th C Nobleman's home converted into a rather tasteful little rest house. A quick whizz around the bazaar - spices, silver, textiles, all senses overloaded. Apparently most of the spice sellers sell to Sainsburys, Tescos and we even found one that sold to Harrods, would you belive it!
Dinner on rooftop of hotel overlooking the city with a view of the fort, all to the sound of the Muslim call to Prayer.
Day 7
Mehrangarh fort - Hugely impressive, built on a sheer rockface by incredibly skilled craftsmen in 16 C. Attacked several times but never overcome - Good cannon ball marks
Jaswant Thada - White Marble memorial built for Maharaja Jaswant Singh by his Maharani on his death in 1899.
Umaid Bhawam Palace - Designed by the Brits and started in 1929. took 15 years to build but was a source of employment during some particularly harsh drought years. Now a hotel and the current bosses house.
Currently Simon is being regularly identified as the cricketer Jacques Kallis or a German so i'm sure several people at home will be happy at that. Sally is a major source of interest and a new scarf was rapidly purchased to save the local teenagers the trouble of staring at her ....!
Ciao for now, early start and a 7 hour drive to Jaisalmer. Off to give 'Paul' a departure brief
